Okay, I promise that I won't be doing this every day until winter comes (December 21, 2008 for those curious readers ...) but I'm just so excited about fall I can barely stand it. I love, love, LOVE this time of year.
This time of year always reminds Jeremy and I of our first trip together. We started dating in May and that October we rented a cabin and drove to the Smoky Mountains.
Why did we choose the Smoky Mountains? Well ... that same year the French Bulldog Club of America held their National Specialty dog show in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. I'm on several e-mail groups related to Frenchies and everyone who attended the show e-mailed pictures and shared their stories of the area. Thanks to those e-mails, I remembered that I had been to the Gatlinburg area YEARS ago, with my parents, when we lived in Georgia. And the more pictures I looked at and the more things I read online, the more I wanted to go.
So, I read as much as I could, scouring the internet for suggestions, finally settling on a cabin to rent, and in October -- off we went! The previous month we had moved into a new apartment and Jeremy had also adopted a French Bulldog -- Norman. With all the changes, we thought Norm might need some special bonding time with his new family -- so Norm accompanied us on our little road trip.
The drive was surprisingly easy - our cabin was perfect (isolated, but not too far from the main entrance to the park and downtown Gatlinburg) - and the fall colors were GORGEOUS. We hiked, ate lots of pancakes here, relaxed, and got to know our crazy new dog. And got to know each other again -- moving in with someone for the first time can be stressful -- moving PERIOD is stressful -- so it was nice to have a chance soon afterwards to reconnect and spend some time with one another.
{We are wearing numerous layers in this picture, it was freezing and we were ill-prepared. And OMG my hair was short then!}
The park had just experienced a freak ice storm -- so as you drove through the mountains, up to Clingmans Dome, the climate seemed to change drastically. We went from this:
To this, just a relatively short drive later!

{I made him do this, because it made me laugh. What a trooper. At this point, we were wearing like ALL of our clothes. Jeremy has like 18 sweaters on in this picture.}
{I am a frozen Ellensicle in this picture. Sporting 3 hoodies and about 5 different fleece jackets.}
On our last day, Norm seemed to thorough enjoy our drive through Cades Cove:
Well, enjoy up to a point -- he is just a bubba after all ...
Anyway. This concludes my trip down memory lane. Now go forth and create some autumnal memories of your own! I leave you with this lovely picture, where I tried to capture some of the gorgeous fall colors in the Smoky Mountains:
